On the 6th of October an exhibition of Theory of Abstract Knowledge, an activity for senior students, took place. This exhibition is essential for grade 12 students to showcase to their grade 11 peers their chosen objects and the focus of their work for this IB Diploma Programme course. In this course, students will have the chance to think about the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
“It’s a huge challenge for students. The student must offer an argued, clear, justified and relevant answer to a question of universal knowledge. It lends itself to a variety of interpretations. The student must use everyday objects, both physical and digital, to work out an answer that brings him or her closer to this general question. The aim of the exhibition is to show how human knowledge is expressed in everyday life and in the everyday objects in which we generally move,” said Romel Castro, professor of Theory of Knowledge.
Mariana Ramírez, grade 12 student and Head Girl, told us what this exhibition meant.
“Each question has to be answered through the objects, specifying their context in real life, their connection to the question and justifying what they bring to the exhibition in general”.
During the day, the students were organised into working groups, each table was made up of 5 students, 2 of whom were from the last grade and the rest from 11th grade. This exercise was carried out in the Secondary School hallways and extended to the Infocentre.
“We are sharing with the 11th graders our experience, helping them with the questions, giving them support because they are just starting this work. We are guiding them towards which question can be more practical to solve, or if the objects they have selected are good to answer. This has to be sent to the IB external evaluators so it is very important to have a good essay,” said Juliana García Ospina, 12th grader.
In this exhibition it is hoped that the senior students will be able to guide their classmates in grade 11 on how they can carry out this research next year and how they can approach the topic to be covered, making this exhibition an exchange of knowledge between the two grades. There were 47 exhibition stands in total.

Exposiciones de Teoría del Conocimiento en Bachillerato
El 6 de octubre se realizaron las exposiciones del curso Teoría del Conocimiento Abstracto, una actividad de los estudiantes de último grado. Esta exposición es fundamental para que los estudiantes de grado 12 exhiban a sus compañeros de grado 11 los objetos elegidos y el enfoque que le han dado a su trabajo para dicho curso del Programa de Diploma del IB. En este curso los estudiantes tendrán la posibilidad de pensar sobre la naturaleza del conocimiento y la manera en la que conocemos lo que afirmamos saber.
“Es un enorme reto para los estudiantes. El estudiante debe ofrecer una respuesta argumentada, clara, justificada y pertinente a una pregunta del conocimiento universal. Se presta para diversidad de interpretaciones. El estudiante debe a través de objetos cotidianos tanto físicos como digitales ir elaborando una respuesta que lo acerque a esta pregunta general. El objetivo de la exposición es evidenciar cómo el conocimiento humano se expresa en la vida cotidiana y en los objetos cotidianos en que generalmente nosotros nos movemos.” dijo Romel Castro, profesor de Teoría del Conocimiento.
Mariana Ramírez estudiante de 12 nos contó lo que significó esta exposición.
“Cada pregunta se debe responder a través de los objetos, especificando su contexto en la vida real, su conexión con la pregunta y justificando qué le aporta a la exposición de manera general”.
Durante la jornada los estudiantes se organizaban por grupos de trabajo, cada mesa estaba compuesta por 5 estudiantes de los cuales 2 eran de último grado y los restantes pertenecían al grado 11. Este ejercicio se realizó en los pasillos de bachillerato y se extendió hasta el Infocentre.
“Estamos compartiendo con todos nuestra experiencia, ayudándoles con las preguntas, dándoles apoyo porque ellos apenas están comenzando este trabajo. Estamos encaminándolos hacia qué pregunta puede ser más práctica de resolver, o si los objetos que tienen seleccionados son buenos para dar respuesta. Esto se debe enviar hacia los evaluadores externos del IB entonces es muy importante que se tenga un buen ensayo”, indicó el profesor Romel.
En esta exposición se espera que los estudiantes de último grado logren guiar a sus compañeros de grado 11 sobre cómo pueden realizar esta investigación el próximo año y de qué forma logran abordar el tema a tratar, convirtiendo esta exposición en un intercambio de conocimientos entre ambos grados. Hubo 47 stands de exposición.
