On the 23rd of September the nautical competition “II Multiclases Calima 2021” took place, an official event of the Liga Vallecaucana de Vela held in the municipality of Calima, El Darien. Our talented 5th grade student, Mariantonia Cardona Duque took part in this event and won a well-deserved first place in the Optimist sailing competition, in the junior category at a national level, as she represented Valle del Cauca. According to Wikipedia, “an Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children and teenagers up to the age of 15”. The preparation, effort and dedication of our young athlete was the basis for acquiring one of her first triumphs in this sport.
This sport came into Mariantonia’s life two years ago when her parents took her to Lake Calima. As soon as she saw those sails and their movements provoked by the wind, she immediately fell in love and decided that she had to sail one of these small boats. She has dedicated herself fully to practice and understands that the secret behind good sailing is to concentrate, to live in the moment, with all her being.
“When I’m sailing I think about concentrating on what I’m doing. How the wind and the waves are. And I really concentrate on what matters to me, on myself so that I don’t fall or capsize. So that I don’t have an accident and am allowed to keep going”.
Her strong mentality is crucial to keep the ship steadied. But it is also important to be physically fit. Any distraction or wave crash could end up plunging you underwater.
“Staying fit is the biggest challenge because I’m very light. So I have to make a lot of effort to keep my boat level so that it doesn’t tip over.
For her mother Ana Cristina Duque this victory is a source of great pride as Mariantonia has been practicing this sport for nearly 2 years and has managed to empower herself to be among the best and achieve her first of many triumphs.
“We are very proud of what she has achieved in this sport in such a short time. We know it’s the result of her discipline, dedication and a great passion for sailing,” said Ana Cristina.
Our rising star of Valle’s sailing sport doesn’t limit her physical activity to sailing practice. Her mother tells us about the positive impact that her extracurricular training at the CCB has had on her performance on the water.
“Mariantonia has been playing sports at the CCB since she was very young. She started in gymnastics and swimming and these two sports have been the basis for her to take up sailing with great ease. Of course the discipline and dedication with which she undertakes all her activities are skills that she has built up at the School”.
Mariantonia is already preparing for her next challenge. In October she will once again represent Valle in the “IV Juegos Nacionales de Mar y Playa”, which will be held in the Gulf of Morrosquillo.
We know that with wind in her sails or without it, Mariantonia will make us at CCB proud with her commitment, dedication and love for sailing.

¡Buen viento y buena mar para Mariantonia!
El pasado 23 de septiembre se llevó a cabo la competencia náutica “II Multiclases Calima 2021”, un evento oficial de la Liga Vallecaucana de Vela celebrado en el municipio de Calima, El Darién. En este tuvo participación nuestra talentosa estudiante Mariantonia Cardona Duque de Quinto Grado quien obtuvo el merecido primer lugar de esta competición en la modalidad Optimist de vela, en la categoría novatos a nivel nacional, y representando al Valle del Cauca. Según Wikipedia, “un Optimist es una embarcación de vela pequeña y de operación con una sola mano destinada a ser utilizada por niños y adolescentes de hasta 15 años”. La preparación, el esfuerzo y la dedicación de nuestra joven deportista fue la base para adquirir uno de sus primeros triunfos en este deporte.
Este deporte llegó a la vida de Mariantonia hace dos años cuando sus padres la llevaron al Lago Calima. En cuanto ella observó esas velas y sus movimientos provocados por el viento, inmediatamente se enamoró y decidió que ella debía navegar uno de estos pequeños botes. Se ha dedicado de lleno a practicar y entender que el secreto detrás de una buena navegación está en concentrarse con todo su ser.
“Cuando estoy navegando pienso en concentrarme en lo que estoy haciendo. Cómo están el viento y las olas. Y realmente yo me concentro en lo que me importa, en mí misma para no caerme, ni voltearme. Para no cometer un accidente y para seguir adelante”.
Su mentalidad fuerte es crucial para mantener estabilizada la nave. Pero también es importante tener buen estado físico. Cualquier distracción o embate de una ola podría terminar por sumergirte.
“El estado físico es el reto más grande debido a que yo soy muy liviana. Entonces tengo que hacer mucho esfuerzo para mantener mi barco plano y que no se me voltee”.
Para su madre Ana Cristina Duque esta victoria es motivo de enorme orgullo puesto que Mariantonia lleva practicando este deporte cerca de 2 años y ha logrado potenciarse para estar entre los mejores y lograr el primero de muchos triunfos.
“Estamos muy orgullosos de lo que ha logrado en este deporte en tan corto tiempo. Sabemos que es el resultado de su disciplina, dedicación y una gran pasión por la navegación”, dijo Ana Cristina.
Nuestra promesa del deporte náutico Vallecaucano no limita su actividad física a los entrenos de Vela. Su mamá nos cuenta sobre el impacto positivo que sus entrenos Extracurriculares del CCB han tenido en su desempeño sobre las aguas.
“Mariantonia ha practicado deportes en el CCB desde muy pequeña. Empezó en gimnasia y natación y estos dos deportes han sido la base para que pudiera tomar el deporte de la vela con gran facilidad. Por supuesto la disciplina y dedicación con la que asume todas sus actividades son competencias que ha construido en el Colegio”.
Mariantonia desde ya se prepara para su próximo desafío. En octubre representará nuevamente al Valle en los IV Juegos Nacionales de Mar y Playa, que se disputarán en el Golfo de Morrosquillo.
Sabemos que con viento a favor o en contra Mariantonia dejará en alto al CCB con su entrega, su dedicación, y su amor por la navegación.
