Wednesday 6th and Friday 8th October were special days for the whole CCB community. The first educational field trip since the beginning of the pandemic took place at the Cali Zoo for children in third grade. This activity is part of the school’s reactivation of the school in order to resume these trips, which are necessary for the complete development of the first transdisciplinary unit of enquiry of the IB Primary Years Programme, called “Who We Are”.
“The third grade started this year with the unit of enquiry “Who We Are” and we used the animals so that they could investigate and inquire into how they behave, who they are in their patterns of behaviour,” said Angélica Henao, a third grade teacher.
In the morning hours, bus number 15 started its engines to make way for this pedagogical experience that had been postponed due to the pandemic. The trip to the city zoo is the beginning of a new stage to reactivate the activities that were in recess due to the difficult health situation. It is a huge challenge for the School, but necessary in order to offer the students the best possible education.
On the way to the Zoo our students were quite impatient to get there, eager to meet their favourite animals. Despite the traffic jams, their enthusiasm remained unrelenting.
This activity is of great importance because it allows them to get to know how animals behave by seeing them directly.
“This is a critical thinking exercise which is: I observe, I think, I imagine. It is a short observation of all animals in their natural habitats, observing their group behaviour. It is information that is not taken from books but that they got during the observation,” said Óscar González, a third grade teacher who accompanied the groups during the activity.
The children toured the Zoo with amazement. The Andean Condor spread its wings as if trying to give them a warm welcome. The Spectacled Bear came so close to the glass separating the children from the animal that he showed them his huge goggles and even the Bengal Tiger walked over his habitat so they could witness his beautiful colours.
“Today we went to the zoo and wrote down the things we observed. We had a few questions which were, what were we seeing, what was I thinking, and what were my connections? We went around all the animals and looked at how they behave and wrote it down. I really liked the spectacled bear because it was swimming and I liked the tiger because it was very big, very beautiful and also because there was a white one. This is what Tomás, one of the students who was present during the educational outing, told us.
A moment that will always live in the minds of our children and teachers, as it was a new beginning for the Colegio Colombo Británico in terms of educational outings. An opportunity for students to learn beyond the books and the classroom. A long awaited return to more normalcy.

Cara a cara con los animales
El miércoles 6 y el viernes 8 de octubre fueron días especiales para toda la comunidad del CCB. La primera salida pedagógica desde el inicio de la pandemia para los niños de tercer grado tercero, se llevó a cabo en el Zoológico de Cali. Esta actividad hace parte de la reactivación escolar con el fin de retomar estas jornadas necesarias para el desarrollo integral de la primera unidad transdisciplinar de indagación del Programa de la Escuela Primaria del IB, denominada “Quiénes Somos”.
“En el grado tercero se inició este año con la unidad de indagación “Quiénes Somos” y utilizamos a los animales para que ellos puedan indagar e investigar cómo se comportan, quiénes son en sus formas de comportamiento”, aseguró Angélica Henao, profesora de tercer grado.
En las horas de la mañana el bus número 15 encendía sus motores para abrir paso a esta experiencia pedagógica que se había postergado debido a la pandemia. La salida al Zoológico de la ciudad es el inicio de una nueva etapa para reactivar las actividades que estaban en receso por la difícil situación de sanidad. Es un reto enorme para el Colegio pero necesario para ofrecerle a los estudiantes la mejor formación.
Durante el camino hacia el Zoológico nuestros estudiantes se mostraban bastante impacientes por llegar, con ansias de conocer a sus animales favoritos. Pese a los trancones, su entusiasmo seguía implacable.
Esta actividad es de gran importancia porque les permite conocer de qué forma se comportan los animales viéndolos directamente.
“Este es un ejercicio de pensamiento crítico que es: observo, pienso, me imagino. Es una observación corta de todos los animales en sus hábitats naturales, observando su comportamiento de grupo. Es información que no es sacada de libros sino que la lograron durante la observación.”, mencionó Óscar González, profesor de tercer grado que acompañó a los grupos durante la actividad.
Los niños recorrieron los espacios del Zoológico con asombro. El Cóndor de los Andes extendía sus alas como si tratara de darles una cálida bienvenida. El Oso de anteojos se acercó tanto al vidrio que separaba a los niños del animal, que les mostró sus enormes anteojos y hasta el Tigre de bengala caminó sobre su hábitat para que pudieran presenciar sus hermosos colores.
“Hoy fuimos al zoológico y anotamos las cosas que observábamos. Teníamos unas preguntas que eran, ¿Qué veíamos? ¿Qué estaba pensando? y ¿cuáles eran mis conexiones? Fuimos por todos los animales y miramos cómo se comportan y lo escribimos. El oso de anteojos me gustó mucho porque estaba nadando y el tigre me gustó porque era muy grande, muy bonito y además porque había uno blanco”. Esto nos relató Tomás, uno de los estudiantes que estuvo presente durante la salida pedagógica.
Un momento que vivirá siempre en la mente de nuestros niños y profesores, por ser un nuevo comienzo para el Colegio Colombo Britanico en cuanto a las salidas pedagógicas. Una oportunidad para que los estudiantes aprendan más allá de los libros y el aula. Un anhelado regreso a mayor normalidad.
