Mateo Payan (10th), formed part of the male team that took second place representing Colombia in the South American Junior Championship 2022 held in Lima, Peru, from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 March. This demonstration of good golf qualifies them for the Junior World Championship in Japan, scheduled for June this year. With 589 impacts they won against Paraguay and Venezuela to obtain the second place on the podium behind Chile. In addition, Mateo took first place in the mixed duo competition with 430 strokes.
“To represent Colombia you have to play well, you have to earn your place and be at a higher level than the others who aspire to be there. The nerves and pressure you feel for the team was the most complex thing to handle during this tournament. The main objective was not to win but to qualify for the tournament in Japan and that was the most demanding pressure we had,” said Mateo.
Two months before the South American Junior Championship, Mateo was notified that he had been selected to go to the junior tournament in Lima. They arrived in the Peruvian capital four days before it began to adjust to the course and prepare the strategy for victory. Two podiums for Mateo, a second place with the men’s team made up of the young golfers Juan Carlos Vásquez and Mateo Castro, and a gold medal in the mixed duo with María José Marín, in a single tournament.
“The gold in mixed was also a great achievement, we both played well and that was key to get the victory.”
Mateo has been participating in different golf tournaments since he was 7 years old. The support of his family and the constant practice of the sport, set him on an upward path as an accomplished player of the 18 holes.

Doble podio para Mateo Payán (10º) en el Campeonato Sudamericano Juvenil de golf
Mateo Payán de 10º, conformó el equipo que ocupó el segundo puesto en representación de Colombia en el Campeonato Sudamericano Juvenil 2022 disputado en Lima, Perú, desde el pasado miércoles 23 hasta el sábado 26 de marzo. Esta demostración de buen golf lo clasifica al Mundial Juvenil de Japón, programado para junio de este año. Con 589 impactos se impusieron ante Paraguay y Venezuela para obtener el segundo lugar en el podio después de Chile. Además, ocupó el primer puesto compitiendo en dúo mixto con 430 golpes.
“Para representar a Colombia hay que jugar bien, se debe ganar el puesto y estar en un nivel más alto que los demás que aspiran estar ahí. Los nervios y la presión por el equipo fue lo más complejo de manejar durante este torneo, el objetivo principal no era ganar sino clasificarse al torneo en Japón y esa era la presión más exigente que teníamos.” indicó Mateo.
Dos meses antes del Campeonato Sudamericano Juvenil le notificaron a Mateo que había sido seleccionado para ir al juvenil en Lima. Llegaron a la capital peruana cuatros días antes de que iniciara para aclimatarse al campo y preparar la estrategia para el triunfo. Dos podios para Mateo, uno segundo lugar con el equipo masculino conformado junto a los jóvenes Juan Carlos Vásquez y Mateo Castro, y una medalla de oro en el dúo mixto con María José Marín, en un solo torneo.
“El oro en mixtos también fue un gran logro, los dos jugamos bien y eso fue clave para conseguir la victoria.”
Desde los 7 años Mateo participa de diferentes torneos de golf. El apoyo de su familia y la práctica constante del deporte, encaminan su trayecto ascendente como atleta consumado de los 18 hoyos.
