Every time the eleven players of the Bulgarian football team, Botev Vratsa, take the field, there is a Colombo Heart that beats in their midst. This is Federico Barrios, an alumnus of the class of 2015, a CCB sporting talent who now plays as goalkeeper for this club in the Bulgarian football league.
Recently, student Tomás Aguirre and the Extracurricular Coordinator, Diego Bernal, met with Federico to learn about his athletic history, how his time at CCB influenced him and what his life is like as a goalkeeper in another country.
Initially, it was Édgar Jurado (RIP), former legendary CCB football coach, who saw the talent in Federico and urged him to join an academy to deepen his skills.
“My parents talked to Edgar and they took me to Sarmiento. I was there for a few months and then I went to Cali’s youth team (…) I played with Cali’s U-15 and U-17 teams until I left for the USA,” Federico said.
Keeping up with the training schedule was demanding for Federico. He had to travel from the campus in Pance to the Sarmiento headquarters in Juanchito. There he found that the support provided by the school was crucial.
“Sometimes I had to ask permission to leave 30 or 40 minutes early to get to training and the school helped me a lot with my football career. The teachers were understanding if I was behind on something. The school supported me from the moment I entered Sarmiento and in my transition to Deportivo Cali’s youth team,” Federico said.
At 15, he left for a football academy in Orlando, where he stayed for three years. College scouts would come to watch him play and it was thanks to those visits that he managed to get a scholarship to the Division 1 University of Dayton in Ohio.
The path from then on was bearing fruit. Federico confesses that becoming a professional athlete involves many sacrifices, patience and perseverance. He recalls those times in the past when every Saturday training session reaffirmed his passion. “I was one of the few who made it to football practice on Saturdays. Because the others either didn’t want to get up or went out for a trip or a party. I was always there every Saturday, I think that was one of the moments when I said: “this is my thing”.
“When the time comes, you have to be ready because I have also witnessed this with teammates, that when the time comes, they are not ready and they miss their chance. I had to wait here in Bulgaria for a year and a half to play and in the last three games the team has done very well and I have played. It was all the patience I had in school, in university, that led to what I wanted, which was to play in Europe and years later I got it, being patient, working hard every day fighting for it,” he said.
Barrios signed his first contract at the age of 24. He considers himself very lucky. He says the education he received in his training process helped him make good decisions on how to take care of his body, recover, find a balance in his life and he stressed the importance of maintaining discipline in both his university studies and football.

Cada vez que los once jugadores del equipo búlgaro de fútbol, Botev Vratsa, salen al terreno de juego, hay un Corazón Colombo que late en medio de ellos. Se trata de Federico Barrios, exalumno de la clase del 2015, talento deportivo del CCB que ahora juega como arquero de este club en la liga de fútbol en Bulgaria.
Hace poco el estudiante Tomás Aguirre y el Coordinador de Extracurriculares, Diego Bernal, se reunieron con Federico para conocer su historia deportiva, cómo influyó su paso por el CCB y cómo es su vida atajando remates en otro país.
En un principio, fue Édgar Jurado (QEPD), antiguo y legendario entrenador de fútbol de CCB, quien vió el talento en Federico y lo instó a que se uniera a alguna academia para profundizar en sus habilidades.
“Mis papás hablaron con Édgar y me llevaron a la Sarmiento. Ahí estuve unos meses y luego pasé a las inferiores del Cali. (…) Hice procesos con la Sub-15 y Sub-17 del Cali hasta que de ahí me fui para EEUU”, contó Federico.
Cumplir con los horarios de entrenamiento era exigente para Federico. Debía trasladarse desde el campus en Pance hasta la sede la Sarmiento en Juanchito. Ahí encontró que el apoyo brindado por el Colegio fue crucial.
“A veces tocaba pedir permiso para salir 30 o 40 minutos antes para llegar a entrenos y el Colegio me ayudó bastante con el proceso futbolístico. Los profesores eran comprensivos si en algo me atrasaba. El Colegio me apoyó desde que entré a la Sarmiento y en mi transición a las inferiores del Deportivo Cali”, señaló Federico.
A los 15 años partió a una academia de fútbol en Orlando, en la que estuvo durante 3 años. Las universidades iban a verlos jugar y fue gracias a esas visitas que logró conseguir una beca en la Universidad de Dayton en Ohio, de División 1.
El camino de ahí en adelante fue dando sus frutos. Federico confiesa que el convertirse en deportista profesional implica muchos sacrificios, paciencia y perseverancia. Recuerda aquellos tiempos pasados en los que con cada entrenamiento sabatino reafirmaba su pasión. “Era de los poquitos que llegaba a fútbol los sábados. Porque los demás, o no se querían levantar o se iban de paseo o de fiesta. Yo siempre ahí todos los sábados, yo creo que ese fue de los momentos en que yo dije: esto es lo mío”.
“Cuando llega el momento te toca estar listo porque también he visto con compañeros, que les llega el momento, no están listos y pierden la oportunidad. A mí me tocó esperar aquí en Bulgaria año y medio para jugar y ya en los últimos tres partidos al equipo le ha ido muy bien y he jugado. Fue toda la paciencia en el colegio, en la universidad, que llevó a lo que yo quería, que era jugar en Europa y años después lo conseguí, siendo paciente, trabajando duro todos los días guerriándola”, manifestó.
Barrios firmó su primer contrato a los 24 años. Se considera alguien muy afortunado. Expresa que la educación que recibió en su proceso de formación le ayudó a tomar buenas decisiones de cómo cuidar su cuerpo, recuperarse, encontrar un equilibrio en las áreas de su vida y enfatizó la importancia de mantener la disciplina correspondiente tanto a los estudios universitarios como al fútbol.
