“The discipline and the order of the CCB helped me to graduate with honours from the university.” – Verónica Hernández.
On Friday, May 20, the alumna Verónica Hernández from the 2018 promotion, just graduated from Architecture with a minor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Carnegie Mellon located in the city of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Verónica was awarded College Honors and was also selected to work for the second largest architecture firm in the world “Global Perkins and Wills” in Washington D.C., United States.
Perkins and Wills is a globally recognized architectural and interior design firm with several locations in the United States and with offices in Mexico, Brazil, England, Ireland, Denmark, and China.
“I was hired to work at the Washington D.C. office. It’s so exciting because the city is so diverse and has such great opportunities. I’m very thrilled to be part of such a big company, setting the standard and changing the way we think and how architecture works, ” says Verónica.
Verónica is proud to represent Colombians abroad.
Being president of the international student group and being part of the Colombian student group at the university. Verónica feels a huge responsibility to stand on behalf of Colombia. “As a young architect working in Washington D.C. at such a large firm, I want to represent the Latin community. To create more conversations for the Latin community in the industry, and represent Colombia is one of my biggest goals, which I have been working towards since university,” mentions Verónica.
Verónica has taken a big step in the architectural world thanks to her dedication. However, she does not dream of setting up her own firm of architects in Colombia. Her ambition has led her to continue working in big and well-established companies in the US market.
Through my architecture career, I can make great contributions to Colombia in the near future. I would love to be part of some projects for Colombia, its infrastructure, and its streets. I feel that being in the USA, I have a great responsibility to honour my country, and to open up new opportunities to other Colombians who would like to work here in the future as well,” revealed Verónica.
How was the experience at Carnegie College?
“It was a five-year college experience that I really enjoyed, that I came to love and I was getting the idea since high school,” mention Verónica “I completed my career, in addition, I did a minor in Innovation and entrepreneur, it was very fulfilling.”
She’s not planning on studying for a new degree but she would like to pursue a Master’s degree to explore another branch of Architecture “I would like to do a master’s degree in sustainable architecture, I love everything that has to do with sustainability, I would love to explore this area furthermore.” Verónica clarify.
Verónica did her internship in SON a specialized company that builds skyscrapers and it was also the one that built the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. “I have a lot of goals and dreams for the near future and that’s something that I’ve been categorized for since I was a little girl, now that I’m starting in environmental work, one of the many goals I have is to obtain a Sostenible Architecture Certificate called LEED,” says Verónica.
How did the CCB help Veronica on her journey to College?
Verónica had a great journey at the CCB, where the institution helped her to develop creativity and discipline in art. She is also very grateful for the IB, as she had the opportunity to travel to New York, visit different museums and appreciate the different buildings that can be seen in the Big Apple.
“The CCB gave me discipline and a sense of organization that allowed me to be aware of everything that was happening at College, to be very organized with my classes, with my grades, to handle the balance, I was/still very disciplined and academically good. Also, I was part of the extracurricular activities which I lived for and wanted to continue in College,” commented Verónica.
On the other hand, Véronica enjoyed being in different student groups like the International Student Union where she was president for two years. As well, she’s passionate about singing and learning new languages.

“Esa disciplina y ese orden del CCB me ayudó alcanzar, graduarme con honores de la universidad” – Verónica Hernández
El día 12 de mayo, la exalumna Verónica Hernández de la promoción 2018 se graduó de Arquitectura con minor en Innovation and Entrepreneurship en la Universidad Carnegie Mellon ubicada en la ciudad de Pittsburg, Pensilvania. Verónica fue condecorada con College Honors, también fue seleccionada para trabajar en la segunda firma más grande de arquitectura “Global Perkins and Wills” en la ciudad de Washington D.C, Estados Unidos.
Perkins and Wills es una firma de Arquitectos y diseño de interiores, es reconocida a nivel global teniendo varias sedes dentro de Estados Unidos y contando con sedes en México, Brasil, Inglaterra, Irlanda, Dinamarca y China.
“Fui contratada para trabajar en la oficina de Washington D.C. Es demasiado emocionante porque la ciudad es muy diversa y tiene grandes oportunidades, me emociona mucho ser parte de una empresa tan grande, ir marcando la pauta y cambiando cómo pensamos, cómo funciona la arquitectura.” Reveló Verónica.
Verónica se siente orgullosa de representar a los Colombianos en el exterior
Siendo presidenta del grupo internacional de estudiantes y formando parte del grupo de estudiantes Colombianos en la universidad. Verónica siente una gran responsabilidad de representar a Colombia “ Siendo una joven arquitecta trabajando en Washington D.C en esta firma tan grande, quiero representar a los latinos, crear más conversaciones para los latinos en la industria, representar muy bien a Colombia es una de mis grandes metas que lo he hecho desde la universidad” dijo Verónica.
Gracias a su dedicación, Verónica ha dado un gran paso en el mundo de la arquitectura. Sin embargo, no sueña con crear su propia firma de Arquitectos en Colombia, su ambición la ha llevado a seguir trabajando en empresas grandes y consolidadas en el mercado Estadounidense.
“Por medio de mi carrera de arquitectura, puedo hacer grandes cosas por Colombia a futuro, me encantaría ser parte de proyectos por Colombia, su infraestructura y sus calles. Siento que estando en USA, tengo una gran responsabilidad de honrar a mi país, y de abrir oportunidades a otros colombianos que a futuro quieran ir a trabajar allá también.” Comentó Verónica.
Comó fue el paso por la universidad de Carnegie College
“Fueron 5 años de una carrera que me encanto, que venía amando y haciéndome esa idea desde el colegio” mencionó Verónica “logre completar mi carrera, además hice un minor en Innovation and Entrepreneur (Emprendimiento e innovación) fue muy enriquecedor”.
No piensa estudiar otra carrera, pero si le gustaría realizar una maestría para explorar otra rama de la arquitectura “Me gustaría hacer un master en arquitectura sostenible, todo lo que tiene que ver con sostenibilidad me encanta muchísimo, me encantaría estudiar más ese ámbito,” aclaro Verónica.
Verónica realizó su pasantía en SON, es una empresa que se especializa en realizar rascacielos y también fue la encarga de contruir el Burj Khalifa. “Tengo muchísimas metas y sueños a futuro y eso es algo que me ha caracterizado desde muy chiquita, ahora que empiezo en el ámbito laboral unas de mis grandes metas es conseguir un certificado en arquitectura sostenible que se llama LEED” dijo Verónica.
Cómo le ayudó el CCB a Verónica en su trayecto a la Universidad.
Verónica tuvo un gran trayecto en el CCB, en donde la institución le ayudó a forjar la creatividad y la disciplina en el arte. Así mismo, agradece mucho al IB; ya que tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a Nueva York, conocer diferentes museos y apreciar los diferentes edificios que se ven en la gran manzana.
“El CCB me dio disciplina y organización que me permitió estar al tanto de todo lo que está pasando en la universidad, ser muy organizada con mis clases, con mis notas, cómo ese balance, yo era muy disciplinada y buena académicamente. También, me encantaba ser parte de las extracurriculares y eso lo quise continuar en la universidad” Comentó Verónica.
Por otro lado, Verónica disfrutó estar en diferentes grupos estudiantiles como el International Student Union en donde fue presidenta por dos años. También, le apasiona cantar y aprender nuevos idiomas.
