Mariana Ramírez Cabal, a current student of the Colegio Colombo Británico and Head Girl of her class, was chosen to study at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She told us about the whole process of applying to this very prestigious university.
The process of working to achieve this goal took several years, and for many years I was not thinking about the university, but carrying out activities that I liked, so I was building a professional profile around these interesting activities. I started the application process at the universities for the general round, which is the round I entered the university,” said Mariana.
The current CCB Rector Nicholas John Reeves stated that “when I heard the news from Myriam I wasn’t sure whether to believe it or not. In my 16 years as a Headmaster in five top-class schools in Latin America, this is the first student to have been accepted to Harvard!”
On the other hand, Harvard’s Director of Admissions Tom Hamel pointed out that ”The Admissions Committee was deeply impressed with your character, achievements, and potential, and we think you’d be a wonderful match with Harvard. We would be delighted to see you join Harvard and the newly-revived Colombian Student Association here”
Luck and dedication
Every year, thousands of highly qualified candidates from all over the world submit their applications, and only a few are accepted. As for Harvard, this year 1,954 students were chosen from a pool of 61,220 applicants — making for a record-low acceptance rate of 3.19 percent for the academic year of 2026.
To apply to a university such as Harvard is not an effortless task as there are many requirements to get into the university. The application process must be started one year in advance since the selection and review of applications is done on a general system. There are several aspects to consider when submitting the application such as:
- Take the SAT
- Be fluent in English
- Write an essay and show your true self
- Take extracurricular classes
- Have a letter of recommendation
- Have an interview with one of Harvard’s staff
- Have a good academic records
Mariana was shocked when her admission letter arrived since she never thought she was going to be selected. I actually don’t know exactly why they have accepted me in the way that this process is so highly competitive. and so different for each university. In fact, several universities of the same level as Harvard or in a lower level didn’t accept me,” said Mariana.
In spite of being rejected by other universities, Mariana was given the possibility to study at such a distinguished university.
“My reaction was one of a genuine surprise because I really didn’t think I was going to get in, as it was the fifth college decision that day, and that day only, out of the four I had opened, not one had accepted me.
How the school helped Mariana in the process of sending her application letter.

The students have the opportunity to travel to England for a cultural exchange to gain a much wider world perspective.
In the case of Mariana, the school played a very important role in that it opened the doors to the possibility of applying to a university like this one, with the support of Myriam Polo, the University Guidance Counselor who is in charge of guiding all students in the process of choosing a university. Myriam kept an eye on all the paperwork, all the formalities, and all the reports that must be sent to each university.
“The school as a learning institution was preparing me and giving me the opportunities to build my resume and my profile and thanks to them I have reached the position I am in now”. Pointed out Mariana “The school has opened the doors to many opportunities for projects, extra-curricular activities that have enriched my profile”.
Mariana has always been interested in getting to know other parts of the world, studying abroad, and getting out of her comfort zone which she is used to ” I have always been interested in seeing what is outside Colombia, exploring what is out there in the rest of the world and that is what led me to carry out this whole process of studying abroad”.
Was Mariana offered a scholarship to Harvard?
“The philosophy behind this university like many others that are similar to this one is that students are accepted based on merit, because it is such a competitive and selective process it is supposed to have the best of the best,” Mariana highlighted.
As previously mentioned, only 3,19% are accepted by the University, but this year Harvard made an official announcement that any families with annual incomes of up to $75,000 (up from $65,000) will be expected to contribute nothing to the cost of their child’s education.
What does Mariana like to do in her free time?
On the other hand, we asked Mariana what she likes to do in her free time and she told us that most of her time is occupied since she is part of the student council, she likes to be in the MUN association of Asobilca and when she is not attending her academic duties, she spends her time reading or watching films and series, she also plays tennis and dances.

Mariana Ramírez Cabal, actual estudiante del Colegio Colombo Británico y Head Girl de su curso, fue seleccionada para estudiar en la universidad de Harvard, en Cambridge, Massachusetts. Este otoño se dirigirá a la universidad de Harvard para comenzar su nuevo journey.
“El proceso de dedicación para cumplir esta meta fue de muchos años, por muchos años yo no estuve pensando en la universidad solo en llevar a cabo actividades que me gustara y así fui construyendo un perfil alrededor de esas actividades de interés. Específicamente el proceso de aplicación en las universidades yo la empecé para la ronda regular que esa esta en la que yo entre ahora” dijo Mariana.
El actual rector Nicholas John Reeves del CCB mencionó que, “Cuando me enteré de la noticia por Myriam no estaba seguro de si creerlo o no. En mis 16 años como director de cinco escuelas de primera clase en Latinoamérica ésta es la primera estudiante que ha sido aceptada en Harvard.”
Por otro lado, el Director de Admisiones de Harvard Tom Hamel destacó que “El Comité de Admisiones quedó profundamente impresionado con tu perfil, tus logros y tu potencial. Nos encantaría que te unieras a Harvard y a la recién Asociación renovada de Estudiantes Colombianos”
Suerte y dedicación
Cada año, miles de aplicantes muy calificados, de distintas partes del mundo, se presentan y solo unos pocos son aceptados. En cuanto a Harvard, este año se eligieron 1.954 estudiantes de un conjunto de 61.220 solicitantes, lo que supone una tasa de aceptación récord del 3,19% para el año de 2026.
Aplicar a una universidad como Harvard no es tarea fácil ya que se requieren varios requisitos para ingresar a la universidad. El proceso para poder aplicar se debe empezar con un año de anticipación, ya que la selección y revisión de las aplicaciones se hace de manera general. Se deben tener en cuenta varios factores para enviar la aplicación como:
- Realizar el SAT
- Dominar el inglés
- Crear un ensayo y mostrar tu verdadero ser
- Haber tomado clases extracurriculares
- Tener una carta de recomendación
- Realizar una entrevista con un colaborador de Harvard
- Tener un buen rendimiento académico
A pesar de ser rechazada por otras universidades, Mariana contó con la oportunidad de poder estudiar en una universidad tan prestigiosa como esta. Así mismo, tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a un estudiante de Harvard que le ayudó con todas las recomendaciones para poder enviar su aplicación.
Mariana quedó muy sorprendida cuando llegó su carta de admisión ya que ella nunca pensó que iba a ser aceptada “en realidad no sé por qué me aceptaron a mi en el sentido de que el proceso es tan competitivo, y tan diferente para cada universidad. En realidad, en mi caso muchas universidades del mismo nivel que Harvard o hasta de nivel menor no me aceptaron” dijo Mariana.
“Mi reacción fue de genuina sorpresa porque en serio no pensaba que iba a entrar, ya que era la quinta decisión de universidades que había ese día solamente, y solamente ese día de las cuatro que había abierto ninguna me había aceptado. Entonces en mi mente no pensaba que fuera a poder entrar. Mi reacción fue que no tenía palabras, no hablé por un buen tiempo.” expresó Mariana.
Cómo le ayudó el colegio a Mariana en el proceso para mandar su aplicación
El Colegio Colombo Británico es reconocido por ser uno de los mejores Colegios de Cali (https://losmejorescolegios.com/ciudad/cali/page/2/) , ya que la preparación que tienen sus estudiantes empieza desde una edad temprana, en donde les fomentan el inglés como segunda lengua y en donde se promueven las clases extracurriculares. Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de viajar a Inglaterra para realizar un intercambio cultural y así poder tener una visión del mundo mucho más amplia.
En el caso de Mariana , el colegio jugó un papel muy importante ya que le abrió las puertas a la posibilidad de postularse a una universidad como Harvard, con el apoyo de Myriam Polo Consejera de Orientación Universitaria quien es la encargada de asesorar a todos los estudiantes en el proceso de escoger una universidad. Myriam estuvo pendiente de todos los papeles, todas las formalidades, todos los reportes que se debe enviar a cada universidad.
“El Colegio como un ente de formación me estuvo preparando y me estuvo brindando las oportunidades para construir mi hoja de vida y todo mi perfil y gracias a ellos estoy en la posición que me encuentro ahora.” dijo Mariana “El colegio como tal me abrió las puertas a muchas oportunidades de proyectos, extracurriculares y de actividades que fueron enriquecedoras en mi perfil”
Mariana siempre se ha interesado en conocer diferentes partes del mundo, estudiar en el exterior y salir de su zona de confort a la cual está acostumbrada “Yo siempre tuve el interés en mí de ver que había afuera de Colombia, explorar lo que hay en el resto del mundo y eso me llevó a llevar a cabo todo este proceso de universidades en el exterior.”
¿Le ofrecieron una beca a Mariana en Harvard?
“La filosofía de esta universidad como muchas que se parecen a esta es que se admiten a los estudiantes basados en sus méritos como es un proceso tan competitivo y selectivo, se supone que ahí están los mejores de los mejores” enfatizó Mariana.
Cómo se mencionó anteriormente solo el 3,19% logra ser aceptado por la universidad, sin embargo este año Harvard dio un comunicado oficial para que cualquier familia con ingresos anuales de hasta 75.000 dólares (frente a 65.000 dólares) no deberán contribuir al costo de la educación.
Qué le gusta hacer a Mariana en su tiempo libre
Por otro lado, le preguntamos a Mariana qué le gusta hacer en su tiempo libre y nos comentó que la mayoría de su tiempo está ocupada. El tiempo libre que le queda se lo dedica al consejo estudiantil, le gusta estar en la asociación del MUN y cuando no está acudiendo con sus labores académicas, se la pasa leyendo o viendo películas y series, también practica tenis y baila.
